Junior Coaching

“We were looking for exceptional kids and what we found were exceptional conditions. The exceptional conditions we found can be summarized under the headings of opportunity to learn, authentic tasks, and exceptionally supportive social contexts”

(Bloom, Developing Talent in Young People)

The below modeldemonstrates the PILLARS that i use when developing junior golfers which, when worked on together or independantly, improve the players ability to play closer to their potential. All players will receive a very unique PERFORMANCE JOURNAL, which is where they will PLAN, TRACK, and MEASURE their performance on an ongoing basis, with a view to ultimately taking ownership of their own games in the future.

Steven coaches many elite juniors at every level of the development spectrum as a Sussex Golf Partnership Lead Coach, Sussex County under 16 coach and as one of only 10 England Regional coaches, where he is responsible for the future development of England stars of tomorrow in the south east of England. He coaches many juniors from the ages of 8 to 18 who are competing in world and European age group championships, to county champions to those representing their country at the under 16 and under 18 levels.

The following model gives a little more insight into how i would look to develop a young player from a young age into the best possible golfer. As you will see it is the careful managing of two very important phases of development, Deliberate Play and Deliberate Practice. You will see in the definitions that what is done with a player in each phase is quite different in order to facilitiates the quickest development. Put simply, deliberate play allows for the young player to both enjoy the game yet develop the thinking and creative skills necessary to play golf but is also intrinsically motivating and deisgned for maximum fun and enjoyment. In the investment years, deliberate practice becomes the framework which is essential for anyone wishing to reach high achievement in golf. Or for anything else for that matter!
